“Kubarkku was born into a world that had minimal contact with non–Indigenous people and culture, when the only white people who travelled to largely inaccessible Arnhem Land were traders, anthropologists and later missionaries.” -Brenda L Croft, Senior Curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art
Kubarkku was the cultural custodian (djungkay) of specific totemic animals and spirit beings. The lorrkon in this collection includes two images of freshwater turtles and one of Namarrkon, the Lightning Spirit. Namarrkon causes the lightning and thunder that accompany tropical storms that occur in his homeland between October and December, before the start of tropical monsoon season each summer. The body form of Namarrkon is said to represent ngaldjurr the Leichhardt’s Grasshopper (Petasida ephippigera), which is active and most visible during this time of year.

Mick Kubarkku | Creative Cowboy Films-discusses his children
Mick Kubarkku painted on wet-weather shelters constructed from large sheets of stringybark attached to a structure of wood saplings. His teachers were rock painters. He had a distinct style using dotted infill (different from fine parallel line work used by artists farther to the west.) He also used complex cross hatched body designs (Rarrk).
In the 1980s, Kubarkku produced abstracted maps of his country-Rainbow Serpent and their waterholes->John Mawurndjul
