Mimih Carving by Crusoe Kuningbal (Guningbal)

Kuningbal Mimih: 28″ tall, 7″ circumference

Mimih are a recurring theme in Kuninjku. Long and slender so they can slip between rock crevices, these elusive spirits live in the escarpment area. Many old examples of red rock art are attributed to mimih. From around 1968, Crusoe Kuningbal produced mimih sculptures for sale through the art center at Maningrida. He produces these distinctive sculptures.” -Crossing Country Exhibition

“…mischievous spirits called mimihs. These live in caves and rock shelters in the stone country of western Arnhem Land, where they left their shadows behind in rock art that is a few thousand years old. They are long, slender figures often depicted either in flight chasing kangaroos or dancing.” -Museum Victoria
